Awesome Student Quote

My girls were on fire today during our game. I swear I'm not making this up.

Situation #1

Ref to my player, during the game: "Can I ask you a question?"

My player: "Sure."

Ref: "Those two Black girls on your team--are they from Africa?" (Note: we actually have five Black girls on our team, but apparently he was referring to the two darker-skinner girls)

My player: "Umm, pretty sure they're American."

Ref: "They just look African. They're pretty dark."

My player: "What?"

Later on bus, while relating story to team:

Other player: "Yeah, if he had asked me that, I would have said, 'No, they're not from Africa, you ignorant motherfucker!'"

Situation #2:

Girl on other team keeps yelling about things (her coach, other player, etc) being "gay"

My player: "You don't mean gay. You mean stupid, annoying, or obnoxious. Say what you mean. You sound really stupid when you say "gay".

We also won. So that was nice.

This is why I don't like ignorance.

What does an African look like? The continent ranges from Mediterranean, to Middle Eastern, to white, to dark, to light, to straight hair, kinky hair, Indian, East Asian and all other varieties of people. So what does an African look like? Typically when people say this, they mean it in a derogatory way -- dark, kinky hair, what they consider "naked, backward, no technology or house having Africans to look like.

Second... what the hell is he doing asking them questions during the game any way that are not pertinent? And even if they were African (not just African American) what difference would it make? Why does he need to know that?

My rant... done.

Glad we have some bright children at the school. Another thing you can look back and know you had some help in as you head out.

Exactly. You know when Pinson came off the field and told me he said that, I went off like crazy. There are 54 fucking countries in Africa, and that's not including various cultures that don't fit into current geopolitical taxonomies. I couldn't believe that. And we were in South City, too! The ref had to be from BFE, fa sho.

Luckily, all of our girls automatically realized it was so incredibly stupid that it was actually pretty hilarious. They easily pointed out all the problems with asking a question like that. They're so beyond that kind of nonsense, which is refreshing.

But, they're my favorite ladies under the age of 19, so duh.

Those are fantastic responses. To the point, smart and honest...

My young BIL went through a phase with everything being "gay". I blame the fact that he listens to too much country music. It's made him mentally challenged.

I'm glad to see that your students are so mature. It really is refreshing.

I agree completely with the gay thing. Let's hope that girl on the other team gets called out by someone on her usage of the word "gay" at some point in the not-too-distant future.
