In the next month or so, I'm going to be in the market for a new laptop. My current laptop belongs to my school, so I must give it back when I peace out of this bitch. I've been using a MacBook for school for the past four years. Love the Mac OS, but leery of staying with a Mac, for two reasons: one, the added cost; two, the horror stories I've heard (and experienced) about Mac's planned obsolescence. My own hard drive crashed and was irretrievable, same with my good friend's less-than-a-year-old HD.
So, does anyone have any recommendations of a moderately-priced reliable laptop?

Look at the Dell Laptops - the Vostro's get decent reviews and at 7-800 for a 17" with WinXP and decent power I think it is at least a contender.
just be careful with WinXP - probably going to be obsolete soon.
Sorry I know you asked me about this before and I was bad and didn't tell you. My new laptop is a Gateway T1625 and I like it a lot. The screen is a little too reflective and the power cord comes loose a bit too easily. But other than that, I have no complaints. It runs smoothly, has a fast processor and good chunk of memory, has decent battery life, and it is very lightweight and easy to carry. And it hardly heats up at all, which is GREAT compared to our old Dell laptop that could brand your thighs if you actually set it on your LAP for more than 10 minutes. Also my new Gateway has a built-in webcam and a built-in cd labeler.
It cost us $499 on sale at Best Buy. Though I would not recommend buying a computer from Best Buy, ever, because we had quite an ordeal trying to buy this one there (long story).
XP vs. Vista doesn't seem to be an issue for most consumer laptops: they seem only to come with Vista.
I'm lusting after the little $900 Vaio that comes in pink, white, black, or red. It's thin, light, and entirely adequate for non-graphics intensive stuff.
I bought a new work laptop in the fall, and I went with a Dell Precision M6300 17" because that's the only way I could still get XP Pro. Given the issues Vista is having, I don't see XP going away anytime soon.
